The great thing about this lead is that it will work with virtually any media player, not just the iPod. Once connected, your car takes over and does the necessary steps to play the music through the cars audio system. So if you have a iPod or an mp3 player, it will work in your car, just as long as the media player has a 3.5mm socket, because some will have 2.5mm sockets or smaller.

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

You are finally going to break down and upgrade that car stereo system you have. You might even still have the factory installed one. If so, then there are some key points you need to know before you head off to the store. One of the most important questions will be: What size Speakers fit in my car? Let's see if we can figure out how to tell this.

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

What Size Speakers Fit in My Car?

For starters, you can check the manuals. The Speaker size is sometimes listed in there, along with a part number for replaceMent. We do not need the replaceMent numbers, just the size of the actual Speaker you are going to replace. If it is not there, then you head to the next step.

You can always just measure them. They are going to be in the doors, or in the flat section behind the back seat, just below the back windshield. You need to access these back ones from the trunk. Most of the time, these are going to be 6x9's, but they could still be a different size. You should need a screwdriver and tape measure for this.

Remove the cover for the speaker and measure the diaMeter. This will give you a certain number. For example, you might have a 5" speaker in each door, and 2 6x9's in the back. If you are having a hard time doing this, or are not real sure, then just ask the guy at the car stereo place. He will be more than happy to help you out with the speaker sizes.

Now, just because you have a standard size in the car, does not mean you need to stick with it. These professional car installers can make the holes bigger to accommodate bigger speakers. There will still be a certain amount of Air space required behind the speaker to get the full sound quality. They can help with this as well.

One last thing is if you want sub-woofers. This is where the bass part of the songs will come from. Most people install these in their trunk in a speaker box. As I stated earlier, certain speaker sizes require a certain amount of cubic in of space to sound their best. There are 2 things to consider here: how much room you actually have in your trunk for this, and what size speakers you want.

If you base this decision on the trunk space, then this will give you a maximum box size, which will then place you in a certain speaker size. Once again, professional car stereo installers have a ton of knowledge in this, and will tell you how big the box needs to be, and what size speaker will go into it. Plus, they will just build it for you, and install it. What could be easier?

If you are trying to find out what size speaker fits in your car, those are the basic options you have to do this yourself. Please, do not be ashamed to ask for help on this. The last thing you want is to spend the money on a good set of speakers, and put them in the wrong location. This will end up not sounding good, plus you will have wasted your money. Get the right speakers for the right Job and you will be definitely happy.

Kicker KS6930 Speakers Review (08KS6930)

The thing that impresses me most about this speaker is that it can handle both the low bass sounds and the high frequency riffs. It can handle a continuous power amount of 100 watts and it has a superb sensitivity rating of 92 dB. The cone woofer consists of molded polypropylene which enables the subwoofer to respond efficiently and effectively to the beat of your music. The edges are made out of Santoprene, a thermoplastic compound that is processed in much the same way as any type of plastic. The difference is that it possesses the same levels of flexibility and durability that are commonly found with natural rubber compounds. Because of the longer life of santoprene in both extreme hot and cold environMents, the material is often preferred over the use of rubber.

Another noteworthy feature of the Kicker KS6930 is the frequency range, which ranges from 30-2100 Hz. This enables the speaker to be versatile enough to handle any type of music, from Daft Punk to Jay Z to Beethoven. Further, the magnets are made out of neodymium which is the strongest existing material. Clearly, this speaker one of the best value buys on the market considering its all around capability.

Have you ever experienced problems with getting your car Speakers to work? Since I think many of us car owners have experienced this problem, I will provide this description of how to diagnose the problem of silent Speakers and also give you some hints on how to fix it. Whether you are familiar with car stereo repAir or not, this might help you. If it doesn't, contact a dealer who can do an auto stereo repAir or search for vehicle stereo repair help online. If your stereo Speakers don't work, then try

checking the speakers to see if they are disconnected checking all fuses that are related to the auto speakers tightening the butt connectors to the speakers replacing all or some of the butt connectors

If your speakers are still not working, I recomMend that you test the auto speakers that don't work directly:

Disconnect each speaker that doesn't work from the car's wires and do the test below, doing one at a time. Use a 9v battery and connect its leads to each auto speaker to be tested for a short moMent. Does the speaker have moveMent? Do you hear the sound usually known as a 'pop' or thump?

If your answers to the questions above are 'yes', your speaker will probably be able to make sound and it is likely to work.

This speaker direct test has two possible results: Either the speaker is not able to make sound or it is. If the first is the case, your speaker are dead and you must replace it. If the latter is the case, you should

run new speaker wires and rewire perform the 'popper' tests to get the polarity correct as described above

Now, if this problem still persists you can at least rest assure that the reason is not your speaker. The reason is probably one of the following: Either it is caused by

problems in the deck itself or the connections from the deck.

In this case I recomMend that you contact a vehicle stereo repair shop or do a search online to get information about how to fix these problems.

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

There are several noise sources in a car audio setup. In this article, I'll talk about one where your car Speakers produce noise that seems to increase when you rev the engine. You'll get to learn how to eliminate that annoying noise and enjoy your music.

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

Car Speaker Noise--How To Delete It

First, you must understand that this is simply interference or induced noise. Induced noise can sound like clicking, popping, whirring, buzzing, whistling, or whining. This noise always has a source such as the alternator, power wiring, car amplifier, etc. So this means that the problem can be tackled at the source. Now, you just have to find it.

Power line noise problems (such as those from alternators) can be fixed by adding a capacitor or power line Filter to the live source of the suspectcomponent.

Another area to investigate is the earth, also known as ground wire to the rear of the radio or head unit. Try running a new earth or ground wire from the rear of the radio to a new position (earth) on the car's chassis, replacing the existing earth wire.

If you have installed an amplifier, ensure that the RCA cables running from the head unit to the amp are of good quality. Also make sure they are run along the car away from the car's existing wiring and away from the amplifier's power cable. For the sake of testing, try running the RCA lead loosely between the head unit and the amplifier without actually running them under the carpet. "Rev" your engine with the radio on low volume and see if the noise is gone.

Why Are Customers Important? -5 Sources of Value From Customer Relationships

Why Are Customers Important? -5 Sources of Value From Customer Relationships

We all know the famous line that says keeping customers is less expensive than getting them. It is and, at least intellectually, we understand how painful attrition is to profitability, even if we can't effectively measure it. Well worn, well accepted truisms. So, why doesn't your marketing plan includes a CRM strategy? It should. Customer Relationship Marketing is one of the most important and least exploited opportunities for business success.

Why Are Customers Important? -5 Sources of Value From Customer Relationships

Why Are Customers Important? -5 Sources of Value From Customer Relationships

Why are customers important? Here are five reasons why loyal customers are your most important profit drivers:

Keeping customers, and especially best customers, allows you to recoup your acquisition cost and generate a positive ROI. The longer you keep them the more positive your ROI. Loyal customers are more likely to buymore things from you. They don't have to be sold as hard because they understand your value proposition and, since they have a relationship with you, they are more likely to see your marketing, which increases revenue and profit, and reduces acquisition cost. Loyal customers will pay a higher price. They understand your product and see its value. You don't have to bribe them to buy again. This further improves the profitability of loyal customers. Experienced customers cost less to service. Because they know how your product or service works they need less hand holding, make fewer calls to customer service, and require fewer visits from the sales rep. All this reduces your cost, which improves profitability. Now here comes the kicker, loyal customers are much more likely to beadvocates. They will happily tell their friends and associates about your product. This brings in more great customers with limited to no acquisition cost.

I first learned about this concept, I call it the profit fan, from Fred Reichheldd's excellent book, The Loyalty Effect. If you haven't read it I strongly recomMend you do. If you have read it, you should read it again.

To take advanTAGe of the multiplying affect of customers your first step is to identify your best customers. Understand what they see in your product and how they view the category you compete in. Find out what your best customers are worth.

Then develop a CRM strategy, your customer marketing objectives and strategies, designed to increase your business ' value to them and their value to yourbusiness.

With an understanding of your best customers and having identified the CRM strategy that will create mutual value you can determine the best CRM tactics and set a budget based on customer lifetime value.

The final step is test, measure, and then test some more. Customer Relationship Marketing isn't easy. Getting good at it is an iterative process that will, like all worthwhile pursuits, take time. But with patience, the ROI can be spectacular.

Kicker S12L7, S8L7, S15L7, S10L7 Subwoofer Review 2006-2008 Model-High Performance, Quality, Power

Kicker's ingenuity is the reason why they're one of the top contenders for the best car audio components. The result of that ingenuity is the production of Kicker's Solo-Baric L7 Series subwoofers. We will review in this article particularly the S12L74; a 12 "dual 4 ohm L7 subwoofer.

Kicker S12L7, S8L7, S15L7, S10L7 Subwoofer Review 2006-2008 Model-High Performance, Quality, Power

Pros

Power handling, that is all I have to say. But really, this mighty subwoofer could handle monstrous 1500 watts max with 750 watts RMS. Unlike other cheaper companies, when Kicker say they feature a 750 watts RMS, they really do mean 750 watts RMS. This means you can put out consistently loud (if supplied with proper power) bass on any given day and is capable of peaking at 1500 watts.

The cone is surprisingly not made of any unusualmaterial but uses injection molded polypropylene. However, it is a one piece construction in a patented design Kicker dubbed as "SoloKon". And of course with Solo-Baric construction, it is a square design, allowing for more surface area and more bass production. To top it all off, the surround is Santoprene rubber that is stitched to the cone, providing a highly durable construction that will sure to prevent tearing during high power usage.

Cons

The subwoofer is pricey but you get what you pay for and this subwoofer will definitely impress you with its quality and SPL. With all these great punching features, the subwoofer does have one more drawback other than the price, and that is its break-in period.

The design requires theconsumer to use the subwoofer at low levels for at least 20 hours or about two weeks. This will allow for the suspension structure to move around a bit before it is pushed to its optimum capability. It's a lot like how stiff baseball gloves are when you buy them brand new from the store, and they require a bit of breaking in and wear before it could be usable at all on the field. Unfortunately users will run a huge risk of blowing out the Speakers if they do not properly follow Kicker's recomMendation.

Newer Model Changes Notes

The 2008 and newer models will feature a modified SoloKon design with full back bracing to allow more efficient Air moveMent, giving the new L7 subs the ability to punch much more powerful bass. Unlike the 2006 model, thenew 2008 models have periMeter venting. It looks a lot like a hand holding a square bowl; where as the older models have virtually no openings for venting. As a result, there is no need for extra mounting space for venting-giving you the same powerful subwoofer with a much shallower mounting depth. The cone design has changed a bit as well, giving the 2008 models a fresh but stylish new look; and don't worry about handling power because power ratings are rated at the same as the older models. Binding posts have also been repositioned to the corners of the subs. This will allow for a more convenient installation for multiple-subwoofer setups.

Note: This review covers S8L72, S8L74, S10L72, S10L74, S12L72, S12L74, S15L74, S15L72. 2 or 4 at the end of every model refersdual 2 ohms or to dual 4 ohms. Features are generally the same except for power handling and SPL.

Overall

The Kicker is a magnificent 08S12L74 subwoofer and will perform admirably at incredible power handling levels. The subwoofer features a lot of high performance parts and construction, and the subwoofer will do just what you expect it to do. If you have the extra cash and if you're willing to go through the break-in process, you may be rewarded by this great Kicker subwoofer.

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

Like any good performance, presentation must have a beginning, a middle and an end. Plus, it must be easy to hear, know your audience "gets it" and responds positively. Let's be clear; you present to sell.

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

How to Organize a PowerPoint Sales Presentation-7 Easy Steps For a Perfect Pitch

To deliver a winning sales presentation you must:

* differentiate yourself from your competitors
* convinces your audience you are worth listening to--by being easy to hear
* deliver information so that it is understood and appreciated
* keep your audience listening and engaged from the very first word.

Too many presenters waste their most important opening minutes with the standard "Thank you for inviting us," quickly followed by the "My name is. .." and sailing right into the "I'd like to introduce you to our team." If that's what you do, you areachieving the exact opposite of what you intend. First, you sound like everybody else. Secondly, your beginning is instantly forgettable. And finally, you have given your audience good reason to disengage right from the get-go. Indeed, you are seriously out of tune with the needs of a listening audience.

When you want to win, you need a perfect pitch. Here's the how and why in 7 easy steps.

Step 1

Begin with your Big Message--the one you have polished until it sings.

Benefits

Research tells us that most people: confronted with a stream of information forget almost all of it. In fact, you'd be lucky if your audience remembers two or three specifics from your presentation. In reality, the details you present are not the essential factor in making the sale. YourBig Message is. Open with your message and your audience will remember it.

Your Big Message is the main thing you want your audience to know about you. It is the strong stateMent of fact that sets you apart from your competitors and resonates with your audience so they listen up and respond positively.

Your Big Message is the big reason--in sentence form--that convinces your audience they need you. Polish it, refine it and open with it before you get to a word of content--even before you introduce yourself. Once you have your message--if it's a good one--your audience is engaged. Now you may introduce yourself.

Step 2

Organize and deliver your content around three--maximum four--main topics. These are the topics or subjects that support or testing yourmessage.

Benefits

People understand information only when they can organize it into a coherent structure so it makes sense. Make remembering easy by organizing information into three distinct topics.

Imagine your message is something like: Our equipMent is better built, more reliable and easier to use than any other on the planet. Then choose The topics you must support or evidence that message. So let's say for this message your three topics are technology, design and return on investMent. That's it. The rest of your content must go under those three headings.

Now, whether you are asked to present at warp speed, or are expected to speak for twenty minutes or considerably longer, you can bet your audience will forget the detail, the minutiae, the facts and the figures.Short or long, a well planned presentation follows a three-topic structure. The difference between them is in the amount of detail you put under each heading.

I know--and this is the kicker--no matter how long your presentation is, when it is structured in three sections--or maximum four--your audience remembers your message because you opened with it. What's more, even if they forget all the details, they will remember you talked about three big concepts that tests your message: technology, design and return on investMent. And after all, that's what is really important.

Step 3

Reinforce your message with a big visual metaphor.

Benefits

Pictures are more memorable than words. Pictures can instantly engage your audience subliminally and reinforce themessage you want to convey.

Words matter. Visuals make a difference. The more careful you are in tying everything together with an underlying theme, the more memorable your pitch becomes. If, for example, your big point is that you are the best at putting all the pieces together, you might use a carpentry image as a background throughout and reinforce your message with titles that tie in to the image--titles that begin with words like Building or Crafting or Cementing. Or if you want your audience to know you have a specialized team to work on their behalf, you might use a sports metaphor with a team picture as the background on your slides. Your topic titles should then fit with the sports theme.

Picking appropriate titles to match your theme adds a touch of creativity whilehighlighting your underlying message.

Step 4

Use your slides as a visual aid, not a reading exercise; eliminate as much text as you can.

Benefits

Good eye contact is the key to connecting with your audience. You cannot connect when everyone is reading from the screen. If you must, use bullet points to keep yourself on track or to point out key features or benefits. Deleted sentences or anything else that requires reading.

Do not give your audience text to read while you speak. Research explains that people process visual material and verbal material in different areas of the brain--on separate channels. Listeners can digest information on only one channel at a time--which means that if they are reading, they cannot listen to you.

Research also reportsthat the more senses you can stimulate, the more you improve information retention. If you can stimulate the visual cortex with a striking picture while you deliver information to orally stimulate the hearing sense, you have doubled the chances of your audience remembering anything you say.

Don't worry about forgetting something. This is your stuff and you could talk for hours about it. What's more, if you do leave something out, your audience will never know.

Step 5

Do not print your PowerPoint slides to use as handouts. Create separate, reader-friendly documents.

Benefits

A well written handout is proof that the presentation you delivered is valid and true. PowerPoint slides are designed to be visuals--the exact opposite of reading documents. Slides arehorizontal; documents are vertical. Slides are on dark backgrounds; documents are on white paper. Slides use huge fonts; documents use reading fonts no bigger than 10-12 point because bigger than that is actually harder to read on paper. There's lots more, but you get the idea.

And while Microsoft suggests you use your slides as a handout, it's a big mistake to do so. Handouts that look and read like real documents provide a huge advanTAGe because they are readable and people actually read them. Imagine that! Feel free to include all the facts, data, detail and minutiae you want, and distribute them before the Q and a.

Step 6

End your presentation by returning to your opening Big Message.

Benefits

Your Big Message is the hook on which everything else hangs.Once you finish delivering content, repeat the Big Message you began with--to remind your audience what sets you apart. What's more, when you end where you began, your presentation has the seamless and satisfying quality of a good performance.

When that's done, it's time for Q&A.

Step 7

Practice with a coach to be sure you present with warmth, energy and real language. It's all about your "likability factor."

Benefits

A good coach can make the difference between an amateur performance and a professional one. Remember, your goal is not to be slick, it is to be likable--which requires a careful blend of confidence, energy and enthusiasm.

It's hard to assess your own performance. It's nearly impossible to gauge how likable you are to an audience. To coachwill check to be sure you make good eye contact and speak conversationally, that your body language is open and welcoming, that you appear warm and friendly. A coach will make sure your voice is pleasant, that your passion shows, and that your delivery hits all the right notes.

When making the sale is important, you want a professional's insightful feedback to help polish your delivery.

Follow these 7 steps and become the likable, memorable, easy-to-hear presenter you know you can be. That's a perfect pitch!

Car Stereo Line Output Converter

Car Stereo Line Output Converter

Line output converter can be defined as a small device that converts high-volTAGe Speakerlevel signals to preamp-level signals; which is acceptable to an amp. If u want to connect an amp to your car stereo which doesn't have a Speaker level inputs then it means you need a line output converter to have a preamp outputs. So you can connect your receiver to an amp by converting your receiver's Speaker output into preamp-level signals. It consists of a transformer and (10 to 20 watts) to high-volTAGe resistor and connects to amp by using RCA patch cable. The amplifier in the head unit is being loaded by the resistor. It also has an adjustable gain feature to pull output.

Car Audio Capacitors-Why You can't Do Without Them

Car Audio Capacitors-Why You can't Do Without Them

I've heard the question asked many times before, ' Do I really need a capacitor? ' Before answering that question I ask, ' Do you have a high powered system? ' ' Does it require sudden power bursts? ' ' Is your amplifier being robbed of power? ' If the answers to my questions are yes, make every effort to connect a capacitor to your car audio system.

A capacitor is a bit similar to your car battery; it stores electrical energy. But unlike a battery it doesn't produce its own power, it simply stores it. A car audio capacitor will help you get the most from your amplifier. It will store power for release on demand, delivering it to your amplifier just when it's needed.

Your car amplifier requires a lot of power to play loud music, especially when there's lots of heavy bass.Without a capacitor your amplifier will be robbed of power by parts like your lights, engine, and Air conditioner.

So what happens when your car audio amplifier doesn't receive enough power?

A common occurrence is dimming lights. In such a situation the light will follow the beat of the music. The light will dim each time a heavy bass note sounds. If you were to turn off the lights, your car stereo system would suddenly sound louder and the music would be cleaner.

Your amplifier is simply trying to use more energy than the electrical system can Supply. If a capacitor had been present there would have been enough energy to power your amp. That electrical energy would have already been stored.

When you want to reduce headlight dimming, improve bass response, andincrease the power of your amp, a stiffening capacitor is a must. Equipped with capacitor and an adequate power Supply, your system will get every bit of current it needs. VolTAGe drops will be a thing of the past.

With so many brands available online, it's easy to find a capacitor that meets your needs. You can choose from popular brands like Phoenix-Digital Audio-Blitz, Kole Audio, Pyramid, SoundStorm, Lanzar, Power Acoustik, Pyle, Legacy, Nitro-BMW, SPL, and Volfenhag. No longer will your car amplifier be hungry for power.

Each type of sub requires it's own type of box. If a sub is installed in a box larger or smaller than what is supposed to, it will sound distorted/bad and could be destroyed. Boxes can be built in many shapes, but it is important that the box volume is calculated accurately to achieve maximum performance.

Materials

A box MUST be very sturdy. Most common building materials are 5/8 "or thicker particle board or medium density fiberboard. If building a box with Plexiglas, do not use anything less that 1/2 inch thick. A common material used to mold complex shaped boxes is fiberglass, but it is very hard to work with, and require several layers for a smooth finish.

Gluing, Sealing

Glue should be used at all joints to fillany spaces. Any spaces will degrade the performance of your subs, not to Mention the annoying noise Air makes when being pushed out of a small hole. On applying the glue, let it cure for at least 24 hours before mounting the subs. This is a measure to protect the measures rubbers used to make the subs from the fumes that some manufacturers glue products have.

Holding Joints Together

In connecting box joints, it is best to screw the joints every four inches or so using 2 "-2-1/2" screws. Pre-drill about 3/4 "deep, so that screws do not split the wood at the edges, especially when working with particle/dashboard.

Should I have a Box for Each Sub?

It is advised to have a separate chamber for each sub. Even though not necessary, here are tworeasons why such a directive should be taken: First, if one of the subs blows, then the volume of the box will be "twice" as big for the one remaining working sub. This could cause problems and even damage the other divers. The second reason is bracing. Building a box with a divider in the middle will make the box more rigid.

Ports

Ports must be built into your box design to channel out the Air made by the sub's vibrations. If a pre-made port is not available, the most common material is PVC. PVC is very rigid, comes in different diaMeters. Cut the tubing at the desired length. Consider the volume the port takes up when calculating the volume box. Cut a hole in the box. Make sure the hole is as perfect as possible to minimize gaps between the box and the tube. A couplewood braces can be added for screwing the top the box port. Seal the gaps using a proper sealant (Evo Stick or even silicone can be used).

Bracing

Boxes that are more than a foot in width or length or height, should be braced so that the box becomes more sturdy. This can be accomplished with a piece of wood, maybe 3 or 4 inches wide across the box). It is a good idea to put wood blocks on the corners for reinforceMent. Always consider that blocks, braces, neon lights, etc. inside a box take up space and should be accounted for when calculating internal volume.

Damping/Filling

Damping increases efficiency by subwoofer dissipating some energy that affects the sub, particularly the voice coil. It is advisable to put damping material inside a box.Polyfill Pillow and fiberglass insulation are common, though polyfill is a lot easier on your skin. Polyfill also "tricks" to sub into thinking it is in a bigger box. Play around with different amounts of polyfill until you get the desired results.

Reflections on You're Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins

Reflections on You're Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins

Okay, it took me months to finally purchase Trace Adkins Greatest Hits volume II "American Man." I listen to all kinds of music, including country and I've always liked Adkins, but the main reason I bought this CD was for the song "You're Gonna Miss This." I remember hearing the song a few times on the radio earlier in the year, and of course I Watched Adkins sing the song on the finale of Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice." I hadn't heard the song for a long time and just purchased the CD and listened to it a few times already.

Reflections on You're Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins

It's the words of the song that really hit me. The first verse talks about a girl who can't wait to grow up and her mom tells her she's going to miss this. The second verse has the girl as a brand new bride and telling her dad that the small apartMent is just temporary as she talks about babies and a bigger house, etc. Her dad tells her to slow down, she's gonna miss this. The final verse is five years later with the woman appologising to the plumber for her busy house with the phone ringing, baby crying, and another kid screaming. He tells her he doesn't mind since he has two babies of his own, one 36 and the other 23. He tells her it is hard to believe, but you're gonna miss this.

The chorus after each verse is:

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days
Hadn't gone by so Fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Wow Trace, this song reminds me of another song on the CD, "Songs About Me." But this song is about all of us.

I find myself thinking back to my younger days. Man did I want to grow up and get out of high school and out of the house at times back when I was young. Boy do I miss some of those days now as I look back. I remember hating the Army at times. FTA was a battle cry that did not mean "Follow Top's Advice" as a friend of mine told First Sgt. (Top) one day when he was caught writing the initials in the Snow out behind the barracks. I can remember times in college, times in Japan, times in Korea, a lot of times during law school, that I did not want to be there, how I wanted things to change. Now I look back and miss so much of those times. Well, maybe not law school, but it doesn't seem as bad now as I thought it to be at the time.

Now that I'm a father, this lessons hits home even stronger. My little girl, Cosette, is four years old and just started pre-school. She's growing up so Fast and I already miss some of those days when she was little. I still enjoy all of the new things we do each day now, especially because she is like her daddy in that she loves books. She is trying so hard to learn to read and write. On the first day of pre-school she told her teacher that she couldn't read good yet. Her teacher told her that was okay, and then told my wife and me that it was not till kindergarten that they started teaching zoophonics, a system of learning the letter sounds and phonetic reading. I thought to myself, "she already knows the sounds all the letters make, by next year and kindergarten she'll be reading. Guess she'll be ahead of the curve like I was. "

So, while I'm really enjoying helping her with her reading and writing, I also miss some of the things when she was real small that are passed now.

But here is the kicker. There are times when I am pressed with work, bills, writing projects, my teaching and other goals I work on accomplishing, that I am shorter with the time I have for her. Tonight for instance, I only have a short time to come home from work, eat, spend some time with her, and then get to the gym to work out and teach hapkido. I think of Adkins' song and realize I'm gonna miss this. I'm gonna miss these times and therefore I must make sure to take as much time as possible because it is going to go by so Fast.

Everyone tells the younger generation that time goes Faster as you get older. They say it because it is true. Each and every year goes faster than the one before it. It makes the lessons of "The time is now, the place is here," that Dan Millman teaches in his Peaceful Warrior trainings even more important. Not that they are not always important, it's just as you get older you pay more attention to it.

Or at least you should. Some people don't, and that is sad. Because they are the ones that will probably miss it the most. Miss what? Miss life. Recently I wrote about living, after learning of a friend's 41 year old relative who died of a heart attack. We must not miss life. We must not be too eager to get to the next sTAGe, because trust me, it is coming way too fast as it is, that is if you are fortunate enough to make it to the next sTAGe. A lot of people write about this concept in different ways. I've written on the topic and speak about it as well. I'm sure I'll continue to write and speak on the topic in the future in various ways. Why? Because it is important. It is very important! I thank Trace Adkins for recording this song written by Lee Thomas Miller and Ashley Gorley to remind us yet again of how important it is to live life and to live in the present. To enjoy what we have, because we will miss it. There are other songs, other books, other lessons on this same theme, and maybe I'll write about them in the future as well. I'm also glad I bought the CD for another song that I need to write about too. But that is for another day.

For now, remember, the time is now, the place is here. Live life. Live now. When you look back, "You're Gonna Miss This."

Football's Answer To Building Successful Teams

Football's Answer To Building Successful Teams

A common theme floats through the bleachers of any youth sports event. This theme embodies the essential eleMents of teamwork that are crucial to every business in America. Every manager has the task of assembling teams of people and leading them in a successful direction. Obviously, this sounds much easier than it is, but why?

Ask the parents of young athletes what they think of the coaching and leadership of their sons or daughters team. Most will offer a positive remark about the team and the coach. The unspoken is often at the heart of the matter and deals with the only participant they truly care about; their child. Parents reserve the right to hold lofty opinions of their offspring's athletic prowess and ability to impact the team. They sense that coaches try hard, but rarely see the true athletic genius of their child. Those of you who've spent countless hours on cold, aluminum bleachers can relate to this message.

The problem lies mostly in the message that kids receive at home. They listen and give their team and coach their best effort in practice only to hear a parent tell them how underappreciated and misused they really are on the field of play. Many of these athletes then return to practice wondering themselves why they are not the center of attention or the leading scorer. The results can be devastating for the young person. Unsure of their real value and role on the team they can lose interest, pull others down, or quit. Because the window of athletic participation is short lived for all kids, we often miss the mark as parents and coaches. Youth coaches have a unique opportunity to develop not only the team but each young person's life. The beauty of sports in our world today is that the playing field can be a powerful teacher of life's lessons to come.

In business, just as in youth sports, the football model holds true. Imagine yourself as a football coach for a second. The goal is to establish a vision, set goals, provide roles for particiPants, and design a path to success. Not until you get each of the players to buy into the game plan will you move ahead in the right direction. So where does the football analogy come in?

As the coach you must decide who will fill all of the positions on the field. Much like fielding a business team or office staff, the head coach must find and develop the best center, quarterback, receiver, and place kicker. What qualifications are needed in each position? How do you entice players to accept less glamorous roles on the team? Do you have quality people in your organization that can properly fill and execute these positions or do you need to recruit them? What strategy do you use when a player will not accept the role you present? Would you know how to put the best possible team on the field if you were the coach? The role of a business leader is much the same.

To crystallize this process, a great coach or leader will instill the value and greatness of each person on the team within their specific role. Truthfully, almost every kid grows up wanting to be the quarterback or receiver. What would a team look like with 11 quarterbacks and no one to snap the ball or block for them? As players fit and fill roles on the team they buy into the importance of what each bring to the table. They gain strength and confidence by doing their Job well. Without their role being filled in an important way, the team does not execute to its capabilities. When more than one player fails to accept or execute their role, the team begins to deteriorate from the inside. On the outside, losses fill the schedule instead of wins. My advice for every business leader is to take a look into the genius of the great coaches in sports. You can find them at the eleMentary, high school, college, and pro levels. How and why do they make these tough personnel decisions on a daily basis, year after year. You'll find that each are masters at defining roles and establishing the importance of each role. As each part of the team is assembled and developed through practice and hard work, the inner workings of a successful team are in place. Take a page from the football playbook and create your own winning team.
